About Me

Very happily, Liam continues his second year in Melbourne at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) in the 2017 Professional Performance Program with Howard Penny.

Liam began the cello at age nine in Canberra as part of his schools’ compulsory string program. What is perhaps less well known is that he deliberately started cello secretly in the term before people’s instruments where assigned to ensure he wasn’t given a violin by the music teacher! In 2009 he moved to Sydney to attend Sydney Conservatorium High School studying with Georg Pedersen. After completing Yr 12 he moved “upstairs” in the Conservatorium and attained his Bachelor of Music (Performance) under Umberto Clerici and Julian Smiles in 2015.

A keen orchestral player, some of his professional orchestral engagements have included working with Willoughby Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Sinfonia, Sydney Philharmonia Choirs Orchestra, the Musicians Project and TangoOz Ensemble. Liam has also participated in many youth orchestra programs since the age of 10, including Australia Youth Orchestra, Australian International Symphony Orchestra Institute, Sydney Youth Orchestra and Canberra Youth Orchestra in both tutti and principal positions.

Liam’s recent chamber experiences have been quite extensive, performing in 13 different chamber works featured in ANAM recitals in 2016. Delightfully he participated in the 2017 Mount Buller Chamber Summer School performing in a trio with fellow ANAM student violinist Tiffany Cheng and his sister violist Freyja Meany as scholarship recipients tutored by the Australian String Quartet, Tobias Breider & Josephine Vains. As the cellist in both Ossia Trio and Quercus Quartet, Liam has recorded and performed live for Fine Music 102.5FM and in 2014 toured southern NSW and VIC with Ossia Trio as part of David Miller’s Great Southern Tour.

In his spare time, Liam likes to bake cheesecakes, hang out with friends and add to his Star Wars T-shirt collection!
